Mokananki by Ti.Ta. Saravanamuttu Pillai is first historical novel in Tamil. It appeared in 1895. Adopting actual historical events as the basis ofhis novel, the author has taken a step unusual in Tamil writing, and created a new genre of Tamil narrative prose.

There are several truly novel features in this historical romance. Saravanamuttu Pillai has utilized scrupulously his sources which he had studied carefully himself. All main characters and events are fully historical.

It is not unusual for a writer of historical fiction to study history text books. But when a work of fiction serves as a source for historians, it kindles interest. 'Mohanangi,' the first historical novel in Tamil was one such book. It was published in 1895, and the author was Saravanamuthu Pillai, born in Trincomallee.
